R.I.P. Walkman; Turtles Return to Gulf; Celine Dion Has Twins
Every Monday, tune into Daily Buzz to get the who, what and whereabouts of this weekend's breaking news.
R.I.P. Sony Walkman
It's rare these days to see people humming along to cassette players at the gym or on their commute to work. So it's no surprise that Sony announced on Friday their plan to halt the Japanese manufacturingand distribution of its legendary Walkman. The last batch was shipped to Japanese retailers in April and units will not be replenished after they're sold.
However, Chinese manufacturers will continue to make cassette Walkmans to sell in the U.S and the UK. Sony debuted the cassette Walkman in Japan in 1979 and sold more than 200 million units in the 30 years that followed. The first affordable, portable music player sold commercially, the Walkman brought music-on-the-go into our lifestyles and set the precedent for CD and mp3 players that later took center stage. Many of us have fond memories of rewinding through tapes on a device that's now becoming a relic; Sony's decision is a definite sign that times are changing.
Rehabilitated Turtles Return Home to Gulf
The first rescued sea turtles were successfully returnedto Gulf waters off Louisiana on Thursday, increasing faith in the ecosystem's ability to recover from the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history. This summer, following the Macondo blowout, thousands of turtle eggs were removed from contaminated beaches and more than 200 endangered sea turtles were fished out of oil slicks to recuperate at the Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans. The rescued turtles were fed a mayonnaise and cod-liver oil recipe to allow oil that they had ingested to pass through them. Thanks to Audubon's efforts, less than 1 percent of them died, and 32 fit turtles were placed in plastic tubs and transported by boat from the Louisiana state marine lab in Grand Isle to a 25-mile-long line of sargassum beds 50 miles south. (Many poked their heads out of air holes during the two-hour boat ride!) Brian Stacy, the lead turtle pathologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is optimistic that the released turtles will do well in their new habitat.
Celine Dion Gives Birth to Twins
Famed songstress Celine Dion is now a mother of twins! On Saturday the 42-year-old gave birth to fraternal twin boys at 11:11 a.m. and 11:12 a.m. The babies weighed 5 lbs., 4 oz. and 5 lbs., 10 oz. each and the C-section delivery went as expected, according to her doctor. Dion's rep says the twins are healthy, but will spend the next few days in an incubator because they were born prematurely.
