Can you introduce yourself — tell us more about who you are, where you’re from, and what you do?
I am an artist originally from Los Angeles, went to The Art Institute of Chicago and am now living/working in the Mojave Desert! I took ceramics classes as a kid and have always been very sculpture-minded when it comes to making art. In college I had the facility to start working with ceramics again and it was a dream come true! I love feeling connected with my younger self who loved clay.
Tell us more about your studio! Can you walk us through a typical day in the life?
It has been very hot in the desert so I have been waking up very early and trying to get as much stuff done as I can before it is just too hot to be in the studio. I make everything in waves so one week I will just be making vases and then the next I’ll only be glazing.
What’s been inspiring you lately?
As always my little goofball dog Pony! She is a Min Pin mix and has the funniest personality. I like to pretend she is my apprentice and we both have a deep passion for snacks.
How did your style evolve to what it is today?
I think just naturally it has developed from making a lot of work. I try to be nice to myself when I’m working and mentally it’s allowed me to go to a lot of weird places. Also I take time to work in different mediums and try new things, then when I come back to ceramics I find that the new things have a way of influencing the way I work. Recently I bought a sewing machine from a garage sale and have been destroying all of my clothes trying to hem dresses. It’s a small disaster but hopefully something will come of that.
What’s the most important thing to you when creating a product?
Something fun to listen to! I just discovered a new podcast that I have been listening too constantly (and as a result loosing a lot of sleep – haha) also stretchy pants.
Who are some other artists (in any medium) who you look up to?
I have an A+ group of artist friends that inspire me endlessly! To name a few:,,, Luke Carlson, and.
Any advice for others who are looking to begin their own creative endeavor but are unsure how to start? What have been some of the biggest photo lessons you’ve learned?
Take a good photo of everything you make. There are so many pieces that at the time didn’t think much of or just quickly gave away that I wish I had some evidence of!
Lastly, what’s a dream project/ collaboration for you?
It would be great to collaborate with a dog toy company! I’d also love to decorate a restaurant bathroom.
